about

Hmmm, how to best describe our Jalapeno Funk compilation series?

“A rip-tide thrill ride surfing on waves of raging funk”, “Funkier than James Brown’s socks post-gig.”, “Like inhaling a canister of 100% pure unadulterated funk”… Perhaps we should appropriate a tagline from another seasonal advert - “This is not just funk, this is ‘Jalapeno Funk’.” *

*must be spoken in a suggestive tone

This is the issue we have every year – but this year even more so as it is the 10th edition of our flagship compilation series and of course it’s funkier than ever. Though we simply can’t do it justice with words here goes nothing…

‘Jalapeno Funk Vol. 10’ is a bumper 18 track collection featuring the best of the label roster, some tracks from our friends and no less than six brand new exclusives for you. Cor blimey!

For the exclusives – our resident northern 7” specialist DJ – Smoove kicks things off in style as he picks up The Allergies and Andy Coopers rap jam ‘Run It Back’ and makes his own funk collage version of breaks, beats and rhymes to get down to. Keeping with the theme of taking things back, Izo FitzRoy’s brand new track ‘Glory Days’ meditates on a similar subject matter, produced by the legendary Shawn Lee and complete with Izo’s trademark vocal harmonies and beautiful song craft.

Jalapeno newbie – Flevans gets soulful with Elliott Cole on the floor shaker – ‘Two Steps’ form his forthcoming LP and Soopasoul invites you to his epic ‘Soul Battle’ which boasts more bongos than, well, pretty much anything… Yes, lots of bongos there. If you like them and B-boy breaks then this is one for you.

Last but not least a stalwart of the Jalapeno stable – Basement Freaks is a generous person. He offers up not one but two exclusives here for your aural pleasure – first up is a classic soul instrumentation version of his track ‘White Hot’ featuring the fantastic Kylie Auldist (The Bamboos, Cookin’ On 3 Burners). He also offers up a nu-funk rap cut in the shape of ‘Bring it Back’ with MC Kamy and vocalist Daiva blessing the mic.

But that’s just the exclusives, there’s so much more we have for you… Smoove & Turrell, Gizelle Smith, The Allergies, ephemerals, Dr Rubberfunk, Titeknots and Uebertribe are all getting in on the act. It’s an extravanganza. A celebration. A landmark. It's…. A very good funk compilation. Anyway enough talk, just go listen to it already!
